The reason why learn Phonics for small children

In order to read, it is important that the kids learn how to recognize sounds. They understand the letters as being a symbol, but they do not need to know them all. What is a sound then? Just play the word boom: b - oo - m. So we don't say in kindergarten: the word includes bee, twice the oo and the em. We call it sounds and say it as you read: buh - oo (oo) - m (mm).

Preschool children learn to cut and paste sounds into words. So when I say b-oo-m, the toddler at the end of group 2 must know that I mean the word boom. Conversely, it must also be able to cut words into sounds itself.

In addition to chopping and pasting, the children also learn to name the sound somewhere in the word. For example, the tree starts with the b, in the middle you hear the oo and at the end the m.

Letters can be found everywhere in kindergarten. In this way, the children learn with which letter a word starts. For example, by looking for material in the class that starts with the s.

Practicing the sounds

You can easily apply the practice of sounds during the normal course of events.

Chopping and pasting

Put all kinds of spreads on the table. You take the word of a sort of siege and your child can take it. For example k-aa-s. Of course, you can also do the game the other way around: your child chops and you take it.

Tip: start with short words and expand it slowly. So first cheese, then sausage and only later sprinkles.

Initial letter

Some schools have a letter of the week, you can connect well to this. Hang the letter on the door and name it regularly. Have your child grab all kinds of objects in the living room with that letter as quickly as possible. You can do it several times with a stopwatch so that it contains a competition element. Can it get faster and faster?

Put a letter on a paper and let your child name words with the letter that you write down. Your child can also draw objects with that letter. If this is still difficult, you can also make it into a kind of dictionary. You draw something with the letter and your child guesses what it is.

Placement of the sound

On the way to school, you see everything. During the walk or bike ride, you can practice the placement of the sounds. Where can you find the eu from door, for example? In the front, in the middle or at the back?

Rhymes

If your child has difficulty with rhymes, it is an idea to read many books in rhyme. Then have your child finish the second sentence with the rhyme. A big tip is the books from Boer Boris. Very nice stories and beautifully written in rhyme.
