How do I learn math?

  • You learn maths mainly during class, so listen carefully to the explanation!
  • Your teacher often gives useful tips.
  • Make notes so that you can read the explanation afterward.
  • Actively participate in classroom exercises.
  • Before you get started with your homework: read the boxes with an explanation in the book carefully. The boxes contain enough information to make the assignments.
  • Work concentrated on the exercises from the book. By making the exercises from the book you become familiar with the theory.
  • Always check the assignments you made so that you can learn from your mistakes.
  • Try to find out why you had a problem wrong.
  • You learn more from your mistakes when you find out the right answer instead of someone telling you.
  • Work out your tasks neatly and accurately. Write with a pen and draw with a pencil.
  • Never skip a problem because you do not understand it properly. Try to make it anyway. If it doesn't work, ask your teacher or roommate for an explanation. He or she can help you better on the basis of your incorrect statement than if you have nothing on paper!
  • Write down your answers in full, with calculations, intermediate steps and units. With mathematics it is not so much about the answer, but about the 'road to it'. So always explain how you came to your answer. This can be done on the basis of a drawing, calculation or a brief explanation.
  • Make sure you always have your things in order. You can suffer an unnecessary loss of time or not make certain tasks at all if you do not have certain things (geo, calculator) with you.

Mathematics is a do-it-all subject: it consists of 30% learning theory and 70% making exercises. Without practice, you will not learn how to apply the theory. And without theory you do not understand what is meant by the exercise assignment.
So make sure you:

1. teach the theory and
2. practice, practice, practice !!!
